Counselling & Psychotherapy
Joe Coughlan MIAHIP
I am an accredited Psychotherapist and Counsellor based in Cork City. I trained with the Flatstone Institute and graduated with a Diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy.
As an Integrative Psychotherapist, I employ a variety of working models aimed at helping my clients to be responsible for their own lives, to strive for individual freedom and self-determination, to achieve their true nature and full potential and to self regulate, adjust and adapt.
In Counselling, all that I can bring to the therapeutic setting is myself − the person that I am; my life experiences and the goodness and love I hold in my heart. I don’t profess to have all the answers or be able to fix anyone. I believe each client has the resources, resolve and courage to find their own solution − I help them to achieve that through Counselling.
I believe that it’s only through the therapeutic relationship which develops in Counselling that any healing can be achieved. At all times, I work to and abide by the strict Code of Ethics as defined by the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy [IAHIP], of which I am a member.
” We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time “

I like to view the therapeutic space as resembling an air tight bubble − whatever is discussed and shared, stays in that space. It’s important for my clients to know that there are exceptions to this. I am obliged ethically to breach this confidentiality if;
- the client reveals an intention to harm him/herself or another individual.
- there are breaches of the Child First Legislation regarding matters of physical/sexual abuse relating to children, both present and historic [and also relating to vulnerable adults]
- situations exist where there may be legal or criminal issues involved
All of the above situations would be discussed in detail with the client before any action is taken.
I attend regular supervision. The purpose of this is for me to examine how I am within the therapeutic space and to explore any issues that may arise for me personally. To this end, at times the content of some sessions may be brought to Supervision for exploration but the client’s identity is never disclosed.
Regular supervision is vital in order to provide the best possible service for my clients.
